Providers, healthcare and public health professionals, government agencies, and others all play an important role in improving the health literacy of individuals, communities, and organizations. This learning activity includes two parts:
Learners will participate in an interactive, online learning module to explore the definitions of individual and organizational health literacy and the impact they have on health outcomes, health equity, and our public health and health care system. Tools for best practices in health literacy will be shared including plain language and teach-back.
Learners will explore the basics of using the Patient Education Material Assessment Tool (PEMAT), a systematic method to evaluate the understandability and action-ability of patient education materials.
Learners will see an example document and score using the tool and then see the improved document and score after addressing readability and actionability concerns.
The entire learning module is hosted within an online learning platform that allows the learner to take this self-paced course from any device with internet access.
