Gestational diabetes is insulin resistance related to pregnancy hormones. These hormones are made by the placenta. When you deliver, you lose the pregnancy hormones with the placenta.

You are not

  • testing your blood sugar
  • taking medication to manage blood sugars, if prescribed

Your blood sugar, as well as your baby’s blood sugar, is managed and monitored in the hospital after delivery.

  • 6 to 12 weeks after delivery your doctor will schedule a follow up testing.
  • Yearly thereafter your PCP should draw an A1c to monitor for development of Type 2 Diabetes.
